"SANG" (Shield lifting) is one of the main exercises of Pahlevani sport. Sangs consist of two rectangular shaped pieces of hard wood each weighting between 20 - 60 kilograms. A handle is fixed to the middle of each Sang so that the athletes can lift them while lying on their backs. Sangs are made in the shape of ancient shields. Sang lifting is not accompanied by the drumbeat; but when an athlete lifts Sangs, the Morshed or one of the other athletes counts his movements by a special kind of chant.
